Automatic License Plate Recognition System (ALPR)

  

Automatic license plate recognition system (ALPR), which detects and segments the license plate area on the vehicle image obtained with anolog/network cameras; It is a system that reads the characters on the plate by optical character recognition (OCR) methods. ALPR consist of three main elements which are anolog/network camera with IR leds, license plate recognition software and hardware of the system (PC or processor boards)

In this article, detailed information will be given with the license plate recognition system software. License plate recognition system software generally consists of 3 main elements. These are: finding the license plate region, segmenting the letters/numbers in the found plate region, recognizing the segmented character by optical character recognition methods. Various methods are preferred in plate region detection algorithms. The most popular of these are artificial intelligence methods. Plate region visuals are taught to the system, allowing the software to find plate region.

If a vehicle is added to “White List” section; Barrier which is integrated to the system will be opened by plate recognition system when the plate added to white list is matched with recognized plate.  If a vehicle is added to “Black List” section;Barrier which is integrated to the system will not be opened by plate recognition system when the plate added to black list is matched with recognized plate and the system will give a warning.
